All-Female Cast
Theatre
The Takarazuka Revue is a theatre group developed in 1913. The vision was to employ an all-female crew to perform. This meant that females would play the part of male roles in performances. This was contradictory to Japanese societal norms such as in Bunraku where male performers dominated the arts. The male dominated society of Japan still exists, but Takarazuka Revue was wildly successful and accepted largely by Japanese females in society. This is apparent through the support from generations of female fans over the last 100 years.
